The first information about the holy temple dates from 1544. In the monastery in 1822 the first embossing workshop for icons in Bulgaria worked. There are reports that there was a goldsmith's workshop of the famous Chiprovski school for church utensils and ornaments. The history of the monastery as a place of worship can be traced back to the Thracians, who left traces in the numerous caves around. Near the monastery there is a rocky ridge, from the base of which gushes a karst spring, and on its western wall there are preserved remains of wall paintings.
