How to get there: On the road from the town of Turnu Severin to Orshova, 1 km along the Voditsa valley
The ruins of Vodita Monastery are the oldest documented voivodship foundation and at the same time the fi rst monastic settlement in Romania, governed autonomously according to the rules of the Eastern Church.
The monastery was founded in the 14th century, on the territory of the municipality of Vârciorova, near the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Wallachia. It was built between 1370 and 1372 by the pious Saint Nikodim with the funds of Prince Vladislav I - Vlaiku Voda. Among the later donors of the monastery is Vlad Dracula. The restored monastery was consecrated in 2001.
