The creation of the museum began in 1912, when Professor Bărcăcilă founded the "Historical Museum of Trajan High School". After 1945 themuseum gained more and more importance and developed its research activity as the Museum of the Iron Gate Region. In 1972 the museum opens with two departments: historical and natural sciences with an aquarium presenting Danube fish species. Later, the departments of ethnography and art were established.
Today, the museum covers a wide variety of exhibits, from traditional life to history, art, biology, science, and more. Its ancient section displays remains of Europe's oldest permanent settlement, Schela Cladova, and other items from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. In 2010 ruins of a Roman amphitheater were discovered in the courtyard of the museum. It is thought to be one of the structures featured on Trajan's Column, along with the bridge and fortress. The museum is part of the archaeological park, which also includes Trajan's Bridge, the Drobeta Roman camp, etc.
